Peace Out(doors)
One thing that makes Intertwined unique is that we don’t own a building, nor do we aspire to. This means that our gatherings occur in the greater community. Along with that, our time for worship occurs outdoors. This might seem unusual, but there are a number of reasons:
- Some are able to encounter the divine more readily outdoors
- Some encounter challenges when trying to enter a church building
- Some are better able to sense their connection to the rest of God’s creation outdoors
- The outdoors is often a more comfortable place for children, and offers uncommon opportunities for them to be involved in worship
- No fixed building means we can rotate meeting locations
- We are unburdened by the time, money, and energy needs required by a building
Meeting outdoors means some traditional church practices have been adapted or eliminated. Our worship is shorter than typical services; for one, the week’s message is made available online every Sunday morning in video, written, and podcast form. You can listen to it on the way to or from worship, or whenever best fits your schedule. We bring our own seats (and thus never have to engage in arguments about whether to spend money to upholster our pews!). And we incorporate the environment into worship. This might mean collecting water from a nearby stream to use in a baptism, mutually constructing a worship focal point with nearby leaves and stones, and listening to birdsong and the trickling of a stream during prayer rather than an organ.
Does any of the above resonate? If so, Intertwined might be a place for you. Sign up for our Google Group to stay informed of when we will next be meeting for Peace Out(doors) near you.
